Timing for a JH

Just curious what the timing should be for a 85 rocco with a JH 8v in it.
My friend has one and it's a bitch to keep running once it starts, the car
sputters, backfires a little (through the t-body) and generally won't stay
running until you've started it enough times that you can finally hold the
throttle at keep her around 1500rpm for about 5 min, then she will idle on
her own.  There are some ground wire issues, but for all the sputtering and
backfires, I think there is a timing issue as well.
