Once you pull the cluster you'll see the back has this laminate plastic
- flat copper wire material. The wires run from the instruments to the
power and junction socket. Lets the use of faster manufacturing but it's
not quite Mil Spec nor laptop computer tuff.

Stuff gets brittle over time, contacts get corroded. You might be able
to just clean and coat and replug and be OK.

Lots of 84 GTI era cars have the 'tack works only when cold' problem due
to this.
