How screwed am I? (Was: won't start after cam installation)

humm sounds like your timing is way off, you sure you got it set correctly?
the clanking noise could possibly be from valves tapping the piston head
yeah, could be somethign else as well
the distributor and timing at TDC the car shoudl start right up, if it
doesn't, most likely you don't have it at TDC.

Well, it finally started, but wasn't running so well. With the distributor
turned as far clockwise as I could get it (because that was the way it was
running the best), it was still running quite sluggish. After a little bit,
I noticed there was a high-pitched clanking coming from the No. 1 area.
