Heres to hoping that I blew a gasket and the car didn't

First off I wanted to thank everyone that responded to my post of how to
burp a 16v. The downfall to all this is that I didn't get a chance to try
any of the suggestions because today the car let me know that I didn't do it
right.

I almost made it home tonight (less then 2 miles to go) when I noticed seam
from under the hood. My luck there was the corner gas station so I whipped
in there, popped the hood expecting to see my top radiator hose blown to
bits and the culprit was actually the expansion tank cap. It had be blown
completly off. No damage to the tank, and after I actually found the cap,
no damage there either. I really hope that this saved my head gasket since
I really don't want to dig that deap into the car (compression test is
scheduled). I let the car cool then limped it to the local VW garage. The
mechanic and I will be tearing into the car in the moring as he thinks the
thermostat is toast and after taking a good look, it's prollie the original
to boot (I'm already kicking myself in the ass for not replacing it sooner).
So we figure, we will replace the water pump and the thermostat and then do
a compression test to see about the head gasket. The mechanic feels that if
the cap blew then the gasket at least has a fair chance of being intact.
That along with no traces of water in the 2 day old oil (we drained it just
to be sure) made me feel a bit better.

So, once again, thanks to those that replied.

On a side note a spotted a broken down grey MKII 8v on the side of I-85
northbound (this is in Georgia). I hope this wasn't a lister car. There
was no one around the car or walking either way so i didn't ask the person
that I was riding with to stop.
