Re: US bumpers=safer! was Re: US bumpers=ugly

Umm - i wonder if US bumpers would have made any
difference when I took the Peugeot 309 up the rear (in
the nicest possible way) last summer. Do you think it
would have saved my insurers any of the
GBP5500/USD8000 they paid out? Or would it have made
no difference at all? Or maybe the fact that my car
wouldnt have crumpled as much with US style bollards
fitted would have cost the driver of the lightweight
French car his life?

We have smaller lighter weight bumpers as most of the
cars on our roads are light and small and its only
been recently that we have seen a large influx of
American and Japanese tanks.(And recently German
tanks) We have always had these tanks (Range Rover)but
only in small numbers. Due to these the safety
standards being applied are getting tougher to deal
with the side impact from a suburban mummy in her M1
Abrams doing her make-up, talking on the phone whilst
barrelling down the road at 50 taking Johnny to
school!

Anyway i'm doing my bit - The Jeep Cherokee that I
side impacted after Daddy had dropped little Johnny
off at school and then pulled straight out without
looking (The SUV Immortatlity syndrome) was totaled by
my Audi 90. 1 down - 5 million to go!

Euro bumpers never used to be fashion item as they
only had to deal with lightweight knocks from
lightweight cars. Nowdays is a different matter
though.

I know no-one (and i know a lot of Scirocco owners in
the UK) who has converted to Us Style lights. I do
know someone who has converted to the early style 4
small light set up that we had the UK for about 10
minutes in 82.
