Naw, the noise I was talking about was the clunk, clunk, clunk when it
seemed things were shifting about.

The noise you mention here sounds like wheel bearings.

Jack up the front of the car and rotate the wheel by hand.  

Rumple?

Pull the wheel and look at the brake pads too.
