I did not takle the fuel distributor apart..
I removed the fuel distributor from the air flow assembly, to clean
the rod in the middle of it, it is very easy and does not require taking 
apart the fuel assembly.

the flat screw seperate the fuel distributon assembly from the air flow 
assembly to access that rod that needs to be cleaned, the caps cover the 4 
hex bolts that split the fuel distributions assembly (that is the bit your 
mechanic is warning you about...and I agree with him)

I have a spare fuel distributor that I'd like to give
a once over...  I've been warned by an ex vw mechanic
to "never, ever, take one of those f@%*ing things
apart!"  Should I heed this advice?  I just installed
new injectors, and don't want to get any crap in them,
so I'd like to make sure that it's good and clean
before I install it...
