Mr. Murphy can be a bastard.  Hopefully he has moved on to a honda close by.  

Did the alternator mounts break off?  If so would having it welded up be a
acceptable temp fix?

FWIW, I recently replaced my alt as well, junkyard alts were ~$75-90, rebuilt
Bosch alts were ~$120-200 (potterman/adirondak-motorworks)
