Re: CIS or CIS-lambda? Questions

Well, IMHO, it depends on what you're after.

Seems to me that the PO went about repairing it in a half-assed manner,
using whatever parts were cheap/available from the junkyard, instead of
getting the right pieces. Or maybe he/she removed "all that emissions crap"
it the hopes of making the car faster.

By this time, there are plenty of CIS-lambda equipped VW's in the yards, and
for less than $200 you can be back to original spec. You don't need to do it
_now_ but might be worth your time to accumulate the parts.

Around here Junkyards charge:
$20 Fuel distributor (w/ freq valve)
$25 Exhaust manifold
$25 Intake manifold
$10 EGR valve
$15 vacuum amplifier
$15 misc tubes, vacuum canisters, etc

Get a new O2 sensor, universal single wire $35

OTOH, if you just want to repeat the PO's methods and go about the
"simplest" way to fix it, then you can keep it as is. The CIS-basic works
well and is a solid system. It does not have a way to self-adjust though, so
setting the mixture right is important. I'd recommend a A/F ratio gauge,
and/or an exhaust pyrometer. These will give you an indication of your fuel
mixture. These 2 gauges together cost ~$200 (for the autometer versions)

Part of the problem is that you're not sure of what exactly the PO did. And
you can't start thinking about performance until you know you have the right
fuel mixture.

Jonas
