  Long studs are required by many race sanctioning bodies for this reason
only:  they want to be able to see a certain number of stud threads
protruding past the lug nut so the tech inspectors can easily verify that
the nut has 100+% engagement on that stud.  (It would be very time-consuming
to verify a particular amount of thread engagement on a car's 20 bolts) This
is so some idiot won't try to get away with fasteners that are so short that
only two or three threads are carrying the load.  It's a safety thing, not a
slam on bolts.

Sorry to hear about your back.  I am currently out of work because of an on
the job back injury.

The only reason I mentioned the strength of studs is that you see studs
(long studs) on the rear of a lot of drag cars (rear wheel drive with
slicks).  I assumed this was for strength but didn't know for sure.  In my
last post I didn't say they were stronger only questioned if they were or
not.

Second, why is it so difficult for you to install your wheels?  I know if
you have aftermarket wheels they will not line up with the holes because the
center hole is larger than the edge on the hub but if you buy the centering
pieces that you are suppose to have for aftermarket wheels it is just like
installing a factory wheel.  Once you put the wheel on the hub edge and
apply a small amount of pressure to keep it flat on the hub, you just turn
the wheel to line up the hole and install the bottom lug bolt in first as
tight as you can with your fingers then you can let go of the wheel and
install the rest.  Compare that with studs:  install wheel and apply
pressure until you have the botton lug nut as tight as possible with you
fingers then install the rest.

D.  IF you do install studs, you WILL have more problems if you are trying
to be easier on your back.  I have had alot more problems with the stud kits
(even on my VW Bug which do not have anything to help you align the wheel)
than the lug bolts by far.  And, if you are pulling your wheels off on a
regular basis, studs are not going to help your back problems but instead
make it worse.  I just uninstalled a stud set on a friends car and he HATED
them almost as much as I did.  The ONLY way I would install studs is if I
had to use some kind of super thick spacer and racing wheels or something
where there were no other options.  HTH!!
