Octane doesn't add more power, in fact, there's _less_ energy in the
gasoline as octane goes up. Anyway, increased octane can help prevent
preignition and knock. Under 90% of circumstances, 6 degrees BTDC
is what you should be running your 16v at. Techtonics went through
some experiments at one time, and discovered that the stock timing of
6 degrees made the most power. However, the recent Velocity all
out motor testing (cams, exhaust, chip, etc), discovered that a couple
of more degrees (like 2 more) did make a small amount of power in a
highly modified motor. A general rule is that 16v's don't tolerate
much static advance.
