[Axle] Why is my CV joint flopping around?

Case Study: FF Trans, 90 mm CVs & hubs.

With my trans out I had to move the car from the front of the house to
the back. So with both axles in place and with the 30 mm nut cranked
down at least half power (to avoid damage to the front bearings) I
pushed it to it's current location under the big tree and up on jack stands.

Our friend Dick Wong (he of original owner Rocc fame) came over last
night and noticed the axle on the driver's side wasn't connected to the
CV any more, even though the boot was still in place. In other words the
axle could be rotated without the CV moving.

[btw- D.Wong was the main guy wrenching on my car last night while I
hovered and kibitzed and freshened the trans; he installed my SS brake
lines and then we power bled with new fluid. Thank you sir.)

So,
is it possible the axle has just pulled out of the CV (but what of the
circlip?) or is it possible the CV itself has become separated (like a
shoulder joint)
<shudder>.

Do you think I can just pop the axle back down the middle of the CV
without having to open the boot?

tia,
TBerk
(Don't want to raid the Wabbit for an axle if I can help it.)
