Tech Question: 2L 16V engine..

 I need to know if the motronic system from the 2L 16V engine in this passat
requires a cat to work correctly?

  I know it needs an Ox. sensor, but does the Ox. sensor require a cat for
correct operation?


 I don't need a cat for smog regs. as my old '82 did not come with one, and
around here they are stupid enough to test your car on the old spec (even
with a new engine), so I would rather not retrofit a cat into the car if not
needed.
