Play in shifter, is there a problem, or quick fix?

There may have been play in my shifter all along, but now it seems like it's
rather excessive (84 1.8l).  I don't have any problem getting through the
gears, but just don't want to end up on the side of the road.

Is this something I should look at replacing with a short-shift kit, or
could I just muck around in there and tighten up a few things?  Mind all of
you, mechanically, I'm a full on knucklehead.  Thanks.
