Coolant temp light!

List,

    On some days after i start my car my coolant light will flash even though 
the resivoir is full. What i do is let the car warm up then i let some air 
out of the resivoir, then turn off the car and restart it then it doesnt 
flash. Is the light supposed to detect air in the system or just pressure, do 
i have a pressure leak possibly?? The car is a 88 scirocco 16v
