  most of the times it's because there were changes from '84 to '85.
mostly it was the interior (the seats flattened out on the '86 and up
cars (8v, at least)). i know that the headliner changed as well.
probably the most notable change what the engine. the pre-'85 engines
were of a slightly different design (that plus a few of the early ones
came with 1.7l engines, though i can't remember what year(s)). but most
of the changes were cosmetic. in addition, and probably more
importantly, the scirocco shared many of it's parts with the rabbit
which was discontinued in '84 model year and replaced with the golf.
it's not that some of the parts won't fit (from '82 to '88), it's just
that some places are uninformed or, dare i say, too lazy to figure it
out otherwise.
