re: suspension setups, etc. FAQ anywhere?

Has anyone compiled some basic suspension setup info, such as a good combo of springs/shocks/rear bar/tires& rims for a street car?  I've got an '81, basically stock, and want to plan my mods rather than guess at what works best.

I'm in the northeast, with rather poor roads, so I'll limit my rim size to 14 or 15"...rim width 6 to 7".

I've got boges in the rear struts; don't want to start out with new springs/strut inserts, but thought a rear anti sway bar might be a good addition.  Recommended size?  Any particular brands better/worse?  Should I get the factory GTI setup off a rabbit?

Is there a particular book to purchase that discusses this, and some trade offs involved?
