Driver's door handle

Hey Scirocco people (and other people on the list who own no Scirocco
(gasp!)),

How do I remove my driver's door handle?  The handle is very stiff and
sometimes it just plain won't do its job.  Any tips on how to restore it to
it's past splendor?  Thanks.
