I just went through this on my 78 with a 4K that had been rebuilt by ND. Had 
the bolt kit and everything and it did a sort of SMS. I had been smelling a 
little bit of gear oil (waiting for my 16V conversion) and on Saturday night 
while driving to the illegal drags I found oil pouring out under the tranny. 
So for now I am running an 8V with a 2Y until I get the chance to finish 
re-gasketing my 16V and swap it out.
My advice is pull the tranny and double-check the casing inside the 
bellhousing. Also check and see if you have any fluid leaking between the 
tranny and the block.
