Sunroof Problems (please help)

First off, let me say that as mechanical skills go, I am strictly
amateur class. In fact I have most of my repairs done by a local
shop, and though I am trying to do more and more myself, I still
depend quite heavily on a professional mechanic. Unfortunately, the
mechanic I go to absolutely hates sunroofs, and when I mentioned that
I was having some problems with the roof on my '88 16v, he suggested
calking up the sunroof and calling it fixed! So, since I love my
sunroof, it looks like I am going to have to fix it myself.

Now, on to the problems. The most obvious problem is that the seal
around the sunroof has rotted out, and needs to be completely
replaced. In addition to that, the sunroof has become extremely hard
to retract, and the gears have a tendency to slip with a sound that
is somewhere between a pop and a crunch. My uneducated guess is that
the entire assembly needs to be pulled out of the roof, cleaned,
regreased, rebuilt and reinstalled. This is, to say the least, a
daunting undertaking for someone with my limited skills, so if anyone
has an easier fix, or knows of a good resource I can either look at,
or buy, to help me through this, it would be greatly appreciated!

BTW, to add to the difficulty of all of this, I live in Texas, where
the weather changes by the hour, so any fix I perform, I am going to
have to do in a day, lest my interior get sun baked, soaked, or both.
I don't even know where to start, so any help at all will be a step
in the right direction.

Thanks everyone.

The goal is to overcome the deliberate nature of the process.
