bad lifters?

my lifters are real noisy and i'm trying to see if the noise is
normal given the modifications to the motor...

the motor is a 2.0l 16v, ported head, shrick 256' cams, heavy duty
valve springs balanced bottom end....

ever since i got the motor running (about 15k on it at the moment)
the lifters made noise....the noise doesnt go away once the car is
warmed up....i'm runnign 20w/50 amsoil in it now, and ran 10w/30 in
it during break in (per the reccomendation of the shop that i had
build the motor) i ran 10w/40 during the winter and switched to
20w/50 when it got warmer (all dino oil)...put in the synthetic at
about 10k

the timing is only a few degrees advanced past stock setting
the valve guides have been trimmed down to creat less flow
restriction in the head

i sent the shop a new set of lifters to be installed in the head when
they were finished.....didn't physically see them installed in the
head, so i'm trying to see if i got screwed and they put the old
lifters in (i did have quite a few problems with the shop that did
the motor building, so i wouldn't put it past them that they either
intentionally or unintentionally used the old lifters)

would the shortened valve guides create more noise?.........i had
planned on getting oversized valves put in the head, and was told by
someone who had one of those heads that the lifters tapped loud when
the motor got a little low on oil........i got stock sized valves, so
i wasn't planning on the getting extra noise

i want to get some informed opinions before i plunk down the $ and
rip out the cams to replace the lifters....

the engine makes great power, so i'm not complaining too much, but i
would like it to be quiet if the lifters are indeed bad

*scratching his head*

any input would be appreciated
thanks
Dave
