16v 90 amp alternator..

my rear bearing in my 88 is shot.  does anybody know if you can re-build
these at home?  i called NAPA (yuck)  and they said $150 for a rebuid that
has only the bad stuff replaced and $245 for a complete rebuild.  also mine
is starting to throw some black dust.. is this bad?
