Re: Inner CV diagnosis/replacement

I just changed an axle on my 16V. Not too bad. I bought the whole axle with
both CV joints and spindle complete with grease and everything for like 75 bucks. I
didn't even have to loosen the struts. I just cranked the wheel all the way to one
side and it came out. Triple square bolts #8 spline or 6 mm hex are used on the
inner. Who knows which you have, maybe the allen hex and you wont have to go buy
the spline tool.
You might consider checking the front wheel bearings though. The CV joint will
sound more like a popping noise, especially when the wheel is turned and
accelerating, whereas the wheel bearing will sound like grinding and get louder with
speed, and also make your front end feel like it's not tracking straight or
"floating" when your going straight down the road. A movement of the axle, as you
described, might also be a bad wheel bearing, check it, while you have it jacked up
and see if there's any movement or wobbles between the bearing and the axle spindle
when it's up.
