I have done both of these (actually, in process on the 5th gear swap).

There's a brand new tech procedure on scirocco.org concerning switching
a Scirocco 16v to Motronic...I'd appreciate any feedback (it's been
there for about a week btw).

It can get expensive, but you could cheap it out if you really wanted to.
What's your threshold of pain? ;-)

Oh, you most likely won't be able to do Motronic on the 1.8 as the block
doesn't have the mounting boss for the second knock sensor.  You might
find another place to put it, but would it work properly?  Anyway, it's
all in the tech procedure (if I remembered it all properly).
