need advice dealing w/insurance co.

Well, wouldn't ya know it, as soon as I get my '81 rocco running good a
Fed-Ex truck backs into it. It's been a pain in the ass dealing with the
insurance company (Krawford and Company). They didn't contact me until 4
days after the accident occured, and that was only because after calling
six times and only getting voice mail I finally left a message
saying I was going to consult an attourney if I didn't get a responce back
that day. So 15 minutes later I get a call back and of course they are
trying to be all polite about the whole situation, claiming they tried to
contact me at home (they didn't), and left a message on my answering
machine (they didn't).
Anyway, what I am worried about now is that the insurance company
won't pay for the full cost of the repairs ($1200) because they exceed the
book value of the vehicle. The guy at the body shop told me the insurance
appraisers try to do this whenever they can. Considering the experience
I've already had with this company I'm not expecting them to cough up the
money without a fight, so I'd like some advice on how I should deal with
the situation. The university I attend has free legal councelling for
students, so I think that will be my first stop if I have any more
problems.
For anyone interested, the damaged occured at the front left fender.
The strut housing is bent, the alignment is outta wack, and the wheel
berring is making noise around turns. The accident occured in the parking
lot of my apartment complex. I had just pulled out of my spot to go to
class when the big Fed-Ex truck parked in the middle of the lot started
going in reverse. I layed on the horn but apparently the driver wanted to
be sure he had hit someone before he came to a stop.
