Interesting.  I had opposite experiences.

I have a Passat GLX wagon, and LOVE stomping on that thing and 
getting that shove into my seat.  Before I got my 16v convertible 
running, I took Mike Leach's 16v for a spin, and didn't feel much 
oompf in comparison.  I was worried that I wouldn't be happy with my 
16v.

Well, it's done now, I still think I get more shove in the Passat, 
but the Rabbit is a blast to drive in its own right.
