[mk2] no go (spark somewhere else....)

in an effort to get my '86 8v back on the road before winter, i
replaced a number of things today: wires, cap, rotor, plugs, o2 sensor,
air filter, and fuel filter. when i went to start the car to hear how
much better it sounded, the only thing i got was an engine turning over.
at first, it could have been the gas (the pulgs were dry), but after a
while gas found it's way to be burned (took a while to fill the filter
up, i guess). still, no spark to ignite it. all the wires are plugged in
properly. my dad was gutsy/foolish enough to touch the wire coming from
the coil and didn't get shocked. thinking it was the coil-cap wire, we
replaced it with the old one. still, no spark.
any ideas on what may be wrong will be considered. after messing with
it for the past couple hours, i'm ready for bed. thanx for any help.
