RE: Front wheel bearing replacement/Front-end alignment

The only way to replace the wheel bearing WITHOUT a new alignment afterwards
is with the special VW tool. This is because you have to take the hub
carrier off the car and take it to somewhere with a press to get the bearing
pressed out/in.

I'd say that if you have to have it aligned anyway, just wait on the
alignment until after the bearing job. I spent the $200 for the tool, 'cause
I didn't want to screw with trying to find an open shop with a press and
then paying to have it aligned again. It was still cheaper than what the
mechanic wanted to charge me to have him do it, and I did it all myself in
an hour or so on a Sunday afternoon when I wouldn't have found anyone open.
Maybe I'm just trying to justify the $200, but I think it was worth it in
the end, and it definitely will be if I get a few more uses out of it.
