The 16V has a part within the alternator called the voltage regulator
(octagonal shaped head, attached by two screws on either side; located in
the driver side of the alternator as you look down at it).  You might want
to take it out and see if it is worn past the lines in the middle of the two
prongs.  Replace it first and see if you still have the same problems.
