smog.....check (long)
Well, I thought I'd share my good news with the people that will be most
interested. It passed (that's the short of it, for the long, keep reading).
So 28 days ago I bought this 78 Scirocco with a 1.8 RD motor conversion. The
car runs great, but the last registration sticker was from 1989 (RED, BTW,
which is the same color as the 2001, I thought that was funny). Anyway, fees
were all paid up, it had just never passed smog I suppose. In addition I am
the second owner since the swap, so I don't know the details of the donor
car.
Well, Cali gives you 30 days to get a smog certificate and proof of
insurance before they fine you, so with 2 days left it finally passed. In
the process I had to fabricate a tube to go from the EGR valve to the
(Smaller size) port on the OX equipped dual manifold (I think this was the
major hang up all along). Also the swapper had tried to install an OX system
(sensor, manifold, fuel distributor w/ freq valve, and brain (early A1)) but
it never worked. So I studied my Bosch FI book and deduced that the Freq
Valve is normally closed, so that I just needed to adjust the mixture. I
connected the OX sensor to a A/F monitor and adjusted it to stoich. Then I
took it in to the "man" and after checking the emissions (clean), and
verifying that all the emission control devices work (including the EGR) he
proceeded to tell me that he couldn't pass it because the car was not
supposed to have an OX sensor, but there was one there. I tried to explain,
but he gave me the number to CA-Smog and said I could take it to a station
and have them certify it. Umm....no thanks.
So I yanked the sensor and plugged the hole with the plug that came with a
header. Took it in this morning (different place) and it passed!!!
The amazing thing is that it has a knock sensing ignition, and so the
distributor does not have any vacuum advance mechanisms. Luckily the engine
bay does not have any stickers of the vacuum connections, so he didn't check
it that closely. I don't think their book has vacuum diagrams.
I'm happy.
