Re: GTI vs Rocco Parts.

The FF transmission, along with most other A1 5 speed gearboxes, does use
a 3.89 final drive. However, the 2H, 4K and 7A boxes ALL use a 3.94 final
drive. The 2H and 4K are close-ratio transmissions that shipped in Rabbit
GTI's, Scirocco's, Cabriolets and A1 Jetta GLIs. The 7A is an econo box
with a .71 fifth gear a .89 4th (matches the fifth in the close-ratio
boxes.) It was found in many 84 Rabbits and Jettas, gas and diesel.
IMHO this is an excellent box for a mildly modded motor, as it offers a
performance final drive coupled with a tall fifth gear for cruising
economy. As I understand it, the primary difference between the 2H and 4K
boxes is that the transmission case on the later boxes is compatible with
the A2 trasnmission case - ie. you can bolt up an A2 rear mount. In
addition, the 2H has a slightly shorter fifth gear, .91 vs .89 in the 4K.

Interestingly enough, I've found the 2H to be a more rare box. It was my
understanding that only the 83 Rabbit GTI's and 83 Sciroccos with JH
motors came with 2H boxes, while 84 Sciroccos, Cabriolets, A1 GLIs and
late 84 A1 GTI's came with the 4K box. I currently have 4 4K transmissions
in my inventory, and I have yet to even see a 2H transmission! I guess it
may have something to do with the fact that I don't hang around
Westmoreland bult VW's much... :)

HTH,

Drew (84 Wolfsburg Ed with 7A tranny, anybody wanna buy a 4K or 3?)
