Good news on the easy fixes!!  Compression check is a
good idea.

Get new fluid in there anyway!  

I've had several VW's that had sat for periods of
time.  First, if the temp and oil pressure are OK, get
the tank empty, put in 1/8 of hi-test, and 1 pint each
of Ventil Sauber and Jectron.  Seems to solve a lot of
problems up front.  Replace fuel filter.  Clean TB and
replace all vacuum hose connector pieces.  Check all
fluids then just put some miles under it until you
have confidence, then you can go whole hog at your
leisure!  I've had a one where I fixed everything up
front only to find that I should have parted it in the
first place!
