no start (A1 jetta)

i have been trying to get my 84 gli project to start and have not been
successful so far....

it's an 84 gli, 2.0l audi bottom end, rebuilt jh solid lifter head, g-grind cam

the car has been sitting since last december when i picked it up....it had
maybe 4-5 gallons of gas in it while it has been sitting....i just put just
under 5 in it about 2 weeks ago...

i believe the timing is dead on....i have spark and i have fuel....but it
wont catch.....(the cam is dead on, and the crank is dead on.....not 100%
on the intermediate shaft), plug wires are in the correct firing order...

any ideas on what to check next (or re-check)

even with the timing dead on, i adjusted the distributor from side to
side....when taken to the extreme on one side, it sputtered once or twice,
but didnt' catch.....i tried to overcompensate by putting the distributor
in past where it should be, but still no luck.......i lined up the rotor
with the mark on the distributor.......is the amount of travel on the
intermediate shaft so tiny that it could be 180' off with less than 1/4 of
a turn of the gear?..(i know it doesn't sound possible, but i want to make
sure)...........i was under the impression that the rotor could only line
up one way with the mark on the distributor...........it doesn't look like
you could turn the distributor 180 and not have clearance issues with the
vacum diaphraghm/hall sender)......

any help would be greatly appreciated....i need this to be my daily driver
(both my 87 rocco and my 81 rabbit are being temperemental at the moment )

thanks
dave
