I used the ATF trick once with good success.  I had an Audi Coupe GT with
some seriously noisy lifters.  A mechanic friend suggested the ATF thing.
Basically pour in a quart, run the car at idle for 5-10 min (let it get
warm, but DON'T rev it, ATF doesn't lubricate the same as oil).  Then
drain and put in new oil.  Shut up all but one of my lifters, so it did a
good cleaning job in my case...
