It was the inside of the wheel rubbing on the strut
tower. But my wheel is off only a bit, I don't know if
this would make a difference.

Any ideas?

I had this problem.  I noticed it when it would rain, because then the
rubber tire would squeak against the strut tower mount.  It was a wheel
bearing.  I'd start there.  It may not take care of your clunk (although I
think it might if your bearing is really gone), but it will take care of the
rubbing.
