Me thinks you've answered your question.  Your CV's have to be bathing in 
grease all the time, or else you'll start hearing all of those grinding 
noises.  I packed all 4 of my CV's just a couple weeks ago, and then turned 
around and bought 2 NEW inner CV's and have already put them.  For you math 
whizzes, that's 6 that I've packed in the past couple weeks.  I'm quite sick 
of CV joints.  Anywho, back to the subject: Take the joint apart & thoroughly 
clean it with brake cleaner.  Check for serious pits or cracked parts.  If 
you see nothing too bad, regrease the joint & put it back together.  the 
Bently has detailed instructions for the above.  HTH
