CV joint

Hi All,
    I pulled off my passenger's side half-shaft
because I had a suspicious grinding, metal on metal
noise that would go away when I turned.  I figured
that it was one of the CV joints.  

    My question is how can I diagnose which joint it
is.  The inner joint has lots of grease but doesn't
move easily and the outer joint has no grease because
the clamp wasn't tight enough and all the grease
evacuated all over my wheel.  YUM!!.  The outer joint
seems to move freely though.
