I had this problem a few years ago and it turned out to be the catalytic 
converter taking a shit.  Well, there is nothing in the cat to make that 
noise anymore (if ya catch what im sayin). Very cheap fix to a very expensive 
part.

Brian 86 16v on my way to the VW shop for a new oil cap because it is leaking 
which is weird
