I read this description and the others and still I want to ask;  are you
aware that the toothed pin will flop around backwards when the lever is
pulled too far? 

I have a feeling this has little to do with your exact problem but it's
a common problem and may help someone who thinks their assemblies are
broken. 

Lift that sucker up too high again and flip the 'ting around.
