4sp-5sp shifting problems

i just put a 5 spd in a 1980 that originally had a 4sp in it, and am
having trouble getting it to be able to engage first......i can get
reverse, 3rd, and presumably 5th....but it seems like the whole shifter is
moved over 1 gear (cept for the fact that i can get it in reverse)....

anyone out there have any tricks, or similiar experiences and able to give
me soem advice?...
