I'll probably take the advice and switch over soon as my case of Castrol is
used up.

You were told correctly about the oil filter.  Most German filters have a
pressure valve. I believe it's used to hold oil up in the engine or filter
so that it doesn't all run down into the pan.  This is supposed to reduce
the amount of time it takes the oil to circulate through the system during
a cold start. Perhaps someone else on the list has more specifics.

a lot of generic US filters don't have the valve
