If your engine turns over, your starter is probably not to blame. If it turns over too slow, then it acould be your starter. However, it's more likley it's your battery cables are loose or dirty or not quite right.

I bet this is normal. I bet you never looked at that gauge before while starting? Or if it's not normal it would be a good back up theory for the bad connection.

If your engine turns over as it should, then your problem is with the petrol or the spark. Spark is easy to check, so do that first. take out a spark plug. While it is still pluged into it's wire, hold it up aginst somthing metal. Ask nicely for your GF turn the key.

If you have a good spark (blue spark not orange) than you might have a fuel problem. VWs fuel pumps don't seem to have the same stamina as the rest of the car. While your spark plug is still out, squirt some starting fluid or carb cleaner down the hole. Quickly put the plug back in and try the key again. If trys to start, you have a gas problem. (petrol not flatulance)

The real problem as I see it, is if your starter is good, figuring out how to make it seem like your girlfriend had the correct diagnosis from the get-go. And how whithout her help you could have never figured it out...
