There's a simple way to get the upper bearing halves out without too much
hassle. Then again, laying under a drippy engine is never fun. Well,
sorta. :-D

Ut-oh. You didn't use the 2 piece center mains did you? Dang, those tend
to machine for some odd reason. (We will call it improper thrust washer
clearance) I recall that Kevin Fry(guy) just experienced the wrath of the
2 piece bearing set. 
The 6 piece set is a PITA to install on a motor that's installed in the
car but well worth the end results. Then again, nothing a little grease
cant handle until you get the caps installed and torqued. :)
