Well, if its NOT making any noise when you have someone turn the key on
then what the hell, why not, hit it! 
I fear the end result will end in you replacing the pump anyways.
besides, if you give it a good wack and it starts to run again, would you
feel confident to travel further than the driveway with the car? Hmmm. me
neither.
