engine oil leak advice

Hi all,

My MkII Scirocco is leaking oil from the engine. Most of it seems to be
coming from the head gasket, though the car is new enough to me that I'm
not really sure. Is it feasible for a guy like me (this is my first car,
and I haven't had it very long, though I'm pretty good with tools) to fix
the head gasket on the engine, without taking the engine out (which would
likely make things much easier, though I don't have the space to do it,
nor do I have the equipment)? How likely am I to ruin the engine? Should I
just take it to a shop and have it done by professionals, and forego the
learning experience?

And, on a related note, what shops do you Vancouverites (in B.C.) on the
list recommend around the Vancouver area, both for getting repairs and
getting parts? Bow Wow seems to carry a lot of parts for the Scirocco, and
they're pretty close to me. Anywhere else? Would taking the car to
Volkswagen (given where I keep my car this would be Capilano Volkswagen)
just be a waste of money for these repairs?
