RE: brake bleeding

I don't know about vacuum systems, but I've seen two systems that allow
one-man bleeding.
The cheapest is uses a bottle with a one-way valve which is connected to the
bleed valve. Once you free off the bleed valve, you conect the hose from the
bottle, open the bleed valve fully and then pump through with the brake
pedal until you get clean fluid or, at least, until there are no more
bubbles coming through. You need to make sure you slacken the brake
reservoir cap on the master cylinder and keep it topped-up as you bleed.
Cost <$10.
The other I have seen is a pressure system you connect to the brake
reservoir. You fill the bottle with fluid - the take-up in the bottle
reaches to the bottom - connect it to your reservoir and then connect the
other end to an air source - an inflated car tyre does fine. You can then
work round each bleed valve without having to pump the pedal. This system
is easier than the other but I think the kit is a good bit more expensive.
I've used the two-way valve one a few times with no problems.
Handy hints:
- you need to remember to bleed in the correct order - can't remember
offhand what it is!
- some thread release oil overnight on the bleed valves is a good idea.
- You can get a special bleed valve spanner with thicker jaws - less likely
to snap the valve. I think the bleed valves are 7mm.

Subject: brake bleeding

I'm about to bleed my brakes for the first time, what's the 'preferred'
method. To use some kind of vacuum pump? or have a helper and do it with no
special tools? or, something else?
I can't decide if I want to pick up a 'mityvac bleeder kit' or not. Is it
worth it?

TIA
Ian
