Yah dude! 
First of all, not having an O2 sensor will make the fuel system run in an
open loop. Meaning, its full rich all of the time. Optimum is to have the
O2 sensor in there and doing the job its designed to do.

What? Open hole? Not even something to plug the hole? DUDE! 
if anything, at least stick an old sensor in there to seal the system.
Does it run like shit? Thats probably why. Plug it or install the sensor
and connect the wire so it works right.
