I have taken to lubricating the side tracks( in the 84 GTI ) with white
lithium grease and the pully/ crank with some teflon (snake oil ) inpregnated
lubricant I had lying around for the Bike.

I found that later model controls get stiff over time and lead to people
cracking the track the slide control runs in due to excessive force. I have
replaced the GTI's controls with another, lubricating the control cables and
tracks before instalation. Since the thing mostly runs on vacuum to move the
flaps and whatnot there was not a lot to be concerned with mechanically. Don't
expect heated air from the outside vents unless you are going to reengineer
the ducting underneeth.
