Re: rear brake conv. question



One thing you should know before you do the rear disc conversion is that people
say it's not really worth it in braking power. It looks cool, though. Our cars
are light enough that, IMHO, rear discs are not really necessary. I've never
had a problem with my brakes (stock), and I drive HARD sometimes.
But it's an easy enough conversion. Just unbolt the rear stub axles and bolt on
the new ones. You might have to do something slightly creative with the brake
lines, but nothing really funky. Some people run rear discs without changing
the proportioning valves and say it works fine, but most people recommend
changing the prop valves.
A better way to get more braking is to take the front brakes off the 16v.
They're 10.1" rotors, bigger than the 8v rotors. Then you should probably take
the bigger master cylinder, too, to get the full effect of your increased
braking power. You cannot run smaller than 14" wheels with the big front
brakes, though.
