Why because I'm not afraid to try to stop a crime in progress? Because I
realized that unless I confronted this person, they would likely get away
with whatever they were trying to get out of my buddies Jeep? Because I
realize that the odds of the police tracking the suspect down and arresting
him were nil, so that if I didn't stop him right then, he would not be
punished at all for this crime? If the guy had just laid down, not tried to
run nothing would've happened, other than we would've called the cops, and
had him taken away. But oddly enough, the thief didn't want to wait around
for the police to show up, so it was our decision about whether to attempt
to subdue him, or just let him get away.

Have you ever had your car broken into? Do you have any idea how many
breakins go unsolved? Do you know how little effort police in large cities
generally put into solving these crimes?
